The Amazon River in Brazil allows deep water ships and barges to travel far inland to transport soybeans to export markets. A. Maggi Company officials told a group of U.S. soybean farmers participating in the 2010 Top Producer Frontier Study Tour, sponsored by USB/soybean checkoff, that up to 25 barges can be loaded inland on the rivers connecting to the Amazon River, in places up to 400 feet deep, with Brazilian soybeans and transported to ocean ports in northeast Brazil for export markets. A ship fits tightly into the 100 year old Panama Canal. The transition from U.S. to Panamanian control of the canal finished in 2000 and the Canal Authority already has a new third lane under construction. The Panama Canal allows ships to cut through Latin America to and from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, saving time and money. An official from the Canal Authority told U.S. soybean farmers participating in the 2010 Top Producer Frontier Tour new third lane construction is being financed by a consortium consisting of European Union, Japanese and U.S. banks. China manages the ports at both ends of the canal under a lease agreement with the Government of Panama....
